Description
With its brilliant pink feet and bill, long crane-like legs, and other characteristics the usual duck doesn't display, the Black-bellied Whistling duck was a completely different experience for me when it came down to doing a hunting scene on the Florida marshes.
These ducks, like the North American wood ducks, like to perch on logs, floating moss and brush piles, they also nest in low lying trees, and as strange as the bird's appearance is, it's uniquely beautiful and some great table fare too. The tradition of airboat running in the Everglades is beginning to be a thing of the past also, so in creating a background for this type of painting, there was a lot of ideas that ran through my mind, which created a challenge to get everything into the art without making it appear overcrowded. As it turns out, the painting is well balanced to the point that although the sky's large and colorful, as are the ducks, as is the marsh scenery, it's still hard to notice right off that there's an airboat with a hunter and black lab. Paintings to me are simply reflections of what is, what has been, and the imagined, they are a way to preserve the things that may not be around for long. I love art because it's a means to acquire new knowledge every time you use your brush to create an emotion or memory.
